About This Game
Unscrambling trains lexical access, the retrieval of a stored word from a disordered cue. It is the reverse of normal reading, where letters arrive in order and meaning follows. Here the meaning has to be found before the order can be confirmed.
Word puzzles appear in the same research picture as number puzzles. The PROTECT study from the University of Exeter and King's College London, covering 19,078 adults aged 50 and over, found more frequent word puzzle use associated with better attention and reasoning. Association, not proof of cause.
Solving most words inside fifteen seconds each is a good pace. The difficulty rises sharply past seven letters.
The tip most people miss: rearrange the letters physically rather than staring at them. Looking at the same fixed order locks your reading system into the wrong pattern and it becomes genuinely hard to see past it. Shuffling the tiles, or even writing the letters in a circle, breaks that lock. Most people who give up on a scramble were defeated by the arrangement in front of them rather than by the word itself.
How to Play
Click the scrambled letter tiles in order to spell out the hidden word. Click an answer tile to put a letter back. Use the category label at the top as a hint.
Tips
Try common vowel positions first. The "First Letter Hint" button reveals the starting letter if you're stuck. Skipping costs no points, but guessing wrong breaks your streak.
Scoring
Each correct answer earns 10 points plus a streak bonus: 2 bonus points per consecutive correct answer. The timer counts down from 60 seconds per word. Get as many words right as you can!
