What Puzzle Games Train

Puzzle games train constraint reasoning, the work of narrowing many possibilities down to one certainty. Sudoku and Nonogram are pure deduction with no guessing required in a well formed grid. Sliding puzzles and 2048 add sequencing, where getting one piece right means temporarily disturbing others.

Number and word puzzles show up in research on cognition in later life. The PROTECT study, led by the University of Exeter with King's College London, assessed 19,078 adults aged 50 and over and found that more frequent puzzle use was associated with better attention and reasoning scores. It is an association across a large sample rather than proof that puzzles caused the difference, and that distinction matters.

They suit people who prefer thinking to reacting. Students use them as a focused reset, and older adults often use them as a daily habit they can measure.
