Sliding number games train planning under forced consequences, since every move shifts the whole board and spawns a new tile whether you wanted one or not. You are not solving a static puzzle, you are managing a system that pushes back.

Number puzzles are associated with sharper cognition in later life. The PROTECT study from the University of Exeter and King's College London assessed 19,078 adults aged 50 and over and found more frequent number puzzle use went with better attention and reasoning scores. It is a correlation, not proof of cause.

Reaching the 2048 tile is the headline goal and puts you well ahead of most players. Reaching 1024 already means your board management is sound.

The tip most people miss: never press up. Pick one corner, keep your largest tile locked there, and use only three directions. The moment you press the fourth, your big tile can leave the corner and the structure collapses. Almost every run that dies early dies from one panicked move in the forbidden direction.

How to Play 2048

Use the arrow keys (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in one direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their combined value. A new tile (2 or 4) appears after each move. The goal is to create a tile with the number 2048.

Winning strategy: Keep your highest tile in a corner, typically the bottom-right or bottom-left. Build a chain of decreasing values toward that corner. Avoid moving toward your corner tile whenever possible. Think two to three moves ahead before sliding.

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 and published as an open-source project. It became one of the most-played browser games of all time within weeks of release.
