How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Click any free tile to select it, then click another free tile with the same symbol to remove the pair. A tile is free when nothing is stacked on top of it AND it has an open side (no tile immediately to its left or right). Work from the top layer down and from the edges inward. Clear all 72 tiles to win.

Tile Categories

  • Bamboo (B1-B9): nine bamboo stalk tiles in green
  • Circles (O1-O9): nine circle tiles in blue
  • Characters (H1-H9): nine Chinese character tiles in red
  • Winds (We/Ws/Ww/Wn): four wind direction tiles in purple
  • Dragons (Dr/Dg/Dw): three dragon tiles in orange
  • Flowers (F1/F2): two flower tiles in pink

Tips

  • Start with the top layer. Tiles on upper layers uncover more tiles when removed.
  • Prefer removing tiles that uncover the most blocked tiles beneath.
  • Avoid using the Hint button too early. Save it for when you are genuinely stuck.
  • If no free matching pairs remain, start a new game. Not every shuffle is winnable.
  • When you spot a pair, do not remove it immediately if a better move exists that opens more tiles.

FAQ

What makes a tile "free"?
A tile is free when two conditions are both true: nothing is stacked directly on top of it, and it has at least one open side (no adjacent tile on its immediate left OR no adjacent tile on its immediate right).
Can every deal be won?
No. Mahjong Solitaire deals are randomly shuffled and some configurations are unwinnable. If you get stuck with no matching free pairs, use New Game to deal a fresh board.
Is my best score saved?
Yes. Your highest number of tiles cleared is saved in your browser and persists between visits on the same device.
