About This Game
Stacking games train mental rotation and forward planning under time pressure, the ability to picture a shape turned before you turn it and to judge whether it fits. That skill is measurable and it improves with practice, though the 2016 review by Simons and colleagues in Psychological Science in the Public Interest cautions against assuming such gains spread to unrelated tasks.
A solid score is clearing 40 lines or reaching level 5. Past that, speed rather than skill usually ends the run.
Improvement comes from stack discipline, not fast fingers. Players who keep a flat surface survive bad piece sequences that bury players who chase every line clear.
The tip most people miss: play the next piece, not the current one. Most casual players decide where the falling piece goes and only then glance at the preview. Strong players read the preview first and place the current piece so the next one has somewhere good to land. It costs nothing and it is the single biggest difference between a 20 line run and a 60 line run.
How to Play Block Stacker
Seven different block shapes fall from the top of the board. Use the arrow keys (or the on-screen buttons on mobile) to move each block left and right. Press Up or Z to rotate the block clockwise. Press Down to drop it one row at a time. Press Space to hard-drop it instantly to the lowest valid position. When a horizontal row is completely filled, it is cleared and you score points. The game ends when the blocks stack up to the top of the board.
Controls
- Left / Right arrows: Move the block horizontally
- Up arrow or Z: Rotate clockwise
- Down arrow: Soft drop (one row faster)
- Space: Hard drop (falls instantly)
- P: Pause / unpause
- Mobile: Tap the on-screen arrow buttons
Scoring
- 1 line: 100 points x level
- 2 lines: 300 points x level
- 3 lines: 500 points x level
- 4 lines at once: 800 points x level
- Every 10 lines cleared: level increases and blocks fall faster
Tips
- Keep the board as flat and low as possible. Avoid creating overhangs that trap empty space underneath.
- The ghost piece (faint outline below your block) shows exactly where it will land. Use it to judge drops precisely.
- The long bar is the most valuable piece - use it to clear four lines at once for maximum points. Save a gap on one side to slot it in.
- Hard-dropping early gives you more time to see the next piece and plan ahead.
