If a number has exactly as many covered squares around it as its value, every one of those covered squares is a mine. A 3 touching only three covered squares means all three are mines. How do you open the board safely?
Your first click is always safe in the standard version, because the game places mines after you click so the opening never kills you. Use that. Click into the middle or a corner to open a large blank area, since blank squares cascade open and hand you a big region of numbers to work with for free.
From there, work the edges and corners first. A corner square touches only three others, and an edge square touches only five, so numbers there constrain fewer unknowns and are much easier to solve than numbers in the open middle. Clear the borders, use what they tell you, and push inward. Trying to solve the crowded centre first is how beginners get stuck.
When do you have to guess?
Sometimes logic runs out and no square can be proven safe. When that happens, guess smart rather than at random. Count the mines left and the covered squares left, and pick the square with the lowest chance of being a mine. If eight squares remain and two mines are left, each is a 25% risk, so hunt for any square constrained by a nearby number to a better ratio than the board average.
